My first day in Cardonicus
Once again I stood on the pier, admiring the high, sturdy walls of Cardonicus. Built on the shores of the Thassa, bordering the Northen Forests this impressive city is constantly at war with the neighbours from Rovere. The docks lead to the main gate. I treaded the woodden walkway carefully assesing the situation. It was quiet, Sir Surfer stood his ground, guarding the gates, glancing into the horizon for any approaching ships. The cold winter wind played through his long golden hair and ruffled the folds of his thick fur coat. A slavegirl was kneeling close to his bare legs, with her head resting on his thigh and kept pulling the cape with her small slim fingers to hold it in place against the wind and trying to hide her nakedness from the cold under the heavy folds of fur. Her head was turned towards the bloody spikes where a few days earlier a kajira impaled herself out of love for her master.I walked towards them, wished her master health and greeted the kajira. She seemed thankful for my friendly gesture. Sir Surfer's eyes fell upon me and a smile enlightened his face. "Sweet Lady Akasha, how are you today?", he greeted me.We started chatting about the weather, his wound, about the political situation of the city, about the Roverians' attack. I did not hurry to enter the city as one cannot go past Sir Surfer without stopping for a small chat. Soon another master and two kajirae joined our chat. The discussion shifted towards the past day's event when one of the slavegirls was captured by outlaws. The Chief phyisican, Lady Mercy came to greet me as she recieved word that there is a new physician lady in town who would like to complete her apprenticeship under her careful surveilance. We'we hardly exchanged a few words when another apprentice came running, telling Lady Mercy of a slavegirl who needed assistance. I was invited to join. We hurried up the cobbled street that led to the main square where the physician's office was and found a warrior whose name I did not know at that time, with his kajira in front of the office. We all walked in and the warrior described the situation. She had been captured by outlaws, given breeding wine and used. He wanted to know wether she was with child. Lady Mercy wanted to test my knowledge so she asked me to interview the patient to find out some facts about what had happened. Finding out that the warrior had good reasons to expect a pregnancy, I proceeded to a more indepth examination. The test result was negative. The girl ran out to tell her master the good news. In a few minutes she returned with her master who asked us to give the kajira slave wine. Of course, how foolish of me, I have forgotten all about slave wine. Lady Mercy was watching with the corner of her eye. For some reason (medical or personal, I'm not sure yet) she asked me to give the girl a double dose of slave wine. I did so. It is not proper for an apprentice to question the chief physician. The girl obeyed and drank it all. Gave her a mint to chew on to take away the bitter taste of the slave wine...It was quiet again. The night fell upon the city and the wind became wild. I retreated to my cozy inn room that I have rented until I can find proper housing in Cardonicus and fell on my bed, exhausted by the journey and the seawinds I am not accustomed to. This was my first day as an apprentice physician in Cardonicus.
